Breast milk storage guidelines

The numbers most parents look up at 2 a.m.: how long milk keeps where, what changes once it's thawed, and what to do with a half-finished bottle. These follow the widely used CDC storage guidance for healthy, full-term babies at home.

Storage times at a glance

Milk left in a bottle the baby has already drunk from should be used within 2 hours and then discarded — saliva introduces bacteria that keep growing.

Freeze in feed-size bags

2–4 oz (60–120 mL) per bag wastes far less than a big one. Lay bags flat, leave an inch of headroom, and label with the pump date.

Thaw slowly, oldest first

Move a bag to the fridge overnight, or hold it under warm running water. Use the oldest date in the freezer first so nothing quietly expires.

Never microwave

Microwaves create hot spots that scald and damage some of the milk's protective components. Warm in water and swirl — don't shake hard.

Signs milk has turned

  • A sour, rancid smell that stays after swirling — separation alone is normal.
  • Clumps that don't mix back in when gently swirled.
  • A sharp, distinctly sour taste rather than a mild soapy one.
  • Any bag past its window, even if it smells fine.

High-lipase milk can smell soapy or metallic while still being perfectly safe. Scalding fresh milk before freezing prevents that flavour change.

Keep a stash you can trust

Storage rules only help if you know what you actually pumped and when. Logging every session gives you a dated record of your freezer stash. Pair this with our exclusive pumping schedule and how much milk a baby needs to size each bag to a real feed.
